Distinguished Orbits of Reductive Groups

چکیده
We prove a generalization and give a new proof of a theorem of Borel-Harish-Chandra on closed orbits of linear actions of reductive groups. Consider a real reductive algebraic group G acting linearly and rationally on a real vector space V . G can be viewed as the real points of a complex reductive group G C which acts on V C := V ⊗ C. In [BHC62] it was shown that G · v ∩ V is a finite union of G-orbits; moreover, G · v is closed if and only if G · v is closed, see [RS90]. We show that the same result holds not just for closed orbits but for the so-called distinguished orbits. An orbit is called distinguished if it contains a critical point of the norm squared of the moment map on projective space. Our main result compares the complex and real settings to show G ·v is distinguished if and only if G ·v is distinguished. In addition, we show that if an orbit is distinguished, then under the negative gradient flow of the norm squared of the moment map the entire G-orbit collapses to a single K-orbit. This result holds in both the complex and real settings. We finish with some applications to the study of the left-invariant geometry of Lie groups.

متن کاملADMISSIBLE NILPOTENT COADJOINT ORBITS OF p-ADIC REDUCTIVE LIE GROUPS
The orbit method conjectures a close relationship between the set of irreducible unitary representations of a Lie group G, and admissible coadjoint orbits in the dual of the Lie algebra. We define admissibility for nilpotent coadjoint orbits of p-adic reductive Lie groups, and compute the set of admissible orbits for a range of examples. We find that for unitary, symplectic, orthogonal, general...
متن کاملBranching Rules for the Weyl Group Orbits of the Lie Algebra
The orbits of Weyl groups W (An) of simple An type Lie algebras are reduced to the union of orbits of the Weyl groups of maximal reductive subalgebras of An. Matrices transforming points of the orbits of W (An) into points of subalgebra orbits are listed for all cases n ≤ 8 and for the infinite series of algebra-subalgebra pairs An ⊃ An−k−1 × Ak × U1, A2n ⊃ Bn, A2n−1 ⊃ Cn, A2n−1 ⊃ Dn. متن کاملSelf–Dual Algebraic Varieties and Nilpotent Orbits
We give a construction of nonsmooth self-dual projective algebraic varieties. They appear as certain projectivized orbit closures for some linear actions of reductive algebraic groups. Applying this construction to adjoint representations, we obtain geometric characterization of distinguished nilpotent elements of semisimple Lie algebras [BC1], [BC2] (i.e., nilpotent elements whose centralizer ...
